So, thinking Catherine was right, Vincent took a deep breath as he began, “It has to do with well, it has to resigned intent to go forward slowly, then perhaps it will ease the tension I feel from your failed expectations.”

Catherine bit her lip as she heard these words from Vincent, and they kept ringing in her ears!
MY FAILED EXPECTATIONS?!

Catherine thought Vincent acted as if she  was the only one who wanted to be closer! Catherine took a deep breath, and sweetly turned the tables on Vincent as she readily said, “Yes I agree.”

Vincent widened his eyes, and then slowly nodded, thinking Catherine certainly agreed to that suggestion pretty quickly!

Feeling a bit befuddled, Vincent then said, “Of course that does not mean, we would loose what we have now. I am finding myself looking forward to those moments when we are alone.”

Catherine frowned and thoughtfully said, “I don’t understand…couldn’t those moments cause
ME to get carried away?”

Vincent blushed as he nervously hesitated, and explained, “I assumed this decision of moving ahead slowly, would of course exclude those pleasurable moments we have found together.”

Catherine pursed her lips, as she seethed, “
I see! Well then…I suppose if I can agree to control myself, then we are good! Is that about right Vincent Wells?”

Vincent stood up and asked, “Catherine what is wrong?”

Catherine shook her head angrily, and stood up too, as she said, “Nothing Vincent, absolutely nothing!”

Vincent turned Catherine around, and asked, “Did I say something wrong? You just urged me to say what was on my mind, and now I can see perhaps I was ill advised!”

To which Catherine replied, "Perhaps so, maybe you need a new and objective counsel!"

In reply, Vincent questionably said, "Catherine?"

Catherine took a deep breath, and saw maybe she was over re-acting, and so she looked up at Vincent and concededly said, "You are right, I did urge you to tell me what was on your mind.”

Innocently, Vincent asked, “Please, tell me what I said to hurt and anger you so.”

Hurtfully, Catherine told him, “It’s just your comment, left me feeling as if I am the only one who wants to become closer.”

Vincent expired an understanding sigh, as he then said, “I should have put more thought behind the words I just chose to convey my concern of  letting you down. Allow me to begin again."

Taking her hands in his, he carefully expressed, "I feel the changes you are making in your  life are monumental right now, and I merely meant to suggest we hold on to what we have without advancing. And I thought talking openly about our affections, we could savor the joy of these treasured moments, without the stress expectations bring on. You must know my need for you is immense, and I long to be closer to you.”

Feeling badly she misunderstood, she looked up at Vincent, and with an awing tone said, “Sometimes when the path is not very clear to me, you so eloquently light the way...I actually do agree with you, and  I understand you are only looking out for what is best for us.”

Vincent sighed thankfully, “Yes, that is all I intended to do.”

The light from the multitude of candles there, seemed to cast a glowing hue, which lent a mystic ambiance, to the entire chamber and there they sat silently in tune with one another again.

Breaking the silence, Vincent said, "I'll be right back."

Catherine curiously watched Vincent, as he walked over to her bureau, and picked up the tape player she had given him. Her heart swelled as she watched him handle the tape player, because it seemed so small, in his huge gentle hands. He then pressed the Play button, and the song “Fields of Gold” echoed softly through out the chamber.

Looking at Catherine, he thoughtfully said, “As I listened to the words of this song in your absence, it deepened my loneliness somehow, and it made me long for you to be in my arms once again.”

As Vincent walked toward Catherine, he stood for a moment, thinking just how radiant Catherine looked by the light of the many golden twinkling flames.

Catherine in turn, thought Vincent carried himself, with a gait so very sensual yet powerful. She always loved to watch him walk, and the times he would be walking toward her, unsteadied all that she was.

Vincent then stood before her, and he asked, “Would you dance with me?”

And as the song played...Catherine tipped her head, and whispered, “I would love to dance with you.”

The words of the song went:
~ Sting
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold
So she took her love for to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold
Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold
See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in fields of gold
Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
That we walked in fields of Gold

Catherine stepped into Vincent’s arms, and the two danced as the words and the melody carried them to a beautiful place where it was as if no one else existed

As the song ended, Vincent lifted Catherine’s chin to look into her eyes, and led her to her bed where he longed to hold her again.

As Vincent held his Catherine, his unsteady breathing gained dominance and he said, “You make me believe everything is possible, that every dream I have dreamt may become a reality.”

He then in a low whisper, recited Poe, saying,  “Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?”

Catherine added, “Our life together is a dream Vincent, a beautiful golden dream. One I don’t ever want to wake from.”

Vincent softly expounded, “If it were to be my predestined misfortune to awaken from this dream, to find you were gone with the dawning of the day…then lest...may the Heavens grant me our nights would never end, so you would be forever at my side.”

Vincent then marveled, “As I stood on the balcony tonight, I listened as Joe offered your old position back to you. You could so easily have said yes…but instead you chose this uncertain path here with me.”

Catherine hugged Vincent tightly as she sensually said, “Yes Vincent, I chose you."

The newness of their romance, as they laid in each others arms, carried Catherine and Vincent into the wee hours of the morning, before they finally parted reluctantly, shortly before dawn.

As Vincent pulled himself away, he insisted Catherine remain in bed, and as he lovingly covered her, he blew out all but one of the candles in her chamber, and bade his love a good night.
